Fresh Low Pressure In 24 Hours; Week-Long Heavy Rain Likely In Odisha With Orange Alert By IMD


Bhubaneswar: A fresh low-pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal in next 24 hours, raising the possibility of heavy to very heavy rain in Odisha over the next one week, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Saturday.

The upper air cyclonic circulation over central Myanmar and neighbourhood now lies over north Bay of Bengal off West Bengal-Bangladesh Coasts. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the same region during next 24 hours, the weather agency said.

The low-pressure system is expected to trigger heavy to very heavy rain coupled with thunderstorm activity in different pasts of Odisha till the morning of August 29. The IMD has issued orange and yellow warnings for several districts during the period.

The Met department has advised fishermen and people in low-lying areas to stay alert.
In its midday weather bulletin, the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar issued an orange warning of heavy to very heavy rain in some places over the districts of Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Rayagada, Koraput, and Gajapati during the next 24 hours.

Similarly, yellow alert of heavy rain has been sounded the districts of Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Sundaragada, Jharsuguda, Baragada, Sambalpur, Sonpur, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamala, Nabarangpur, Malkangiri, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha, and Nayagada during the period.

This apart, thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (wind speed reaching up to 30-40 kmph) may occur at one or two places over the districts of Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghapur, Kataka, Sundaragada, Jharsuguda, Baragada, Sambalpur, Debagada, Anugola, Dhenkanal, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Sonpur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamala, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha, Nayagada.

On August 23-24, an orange warning of heavy to very heavy rain has been issued for the districts of Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Kalahandi, Rayagada, and Koraput.

During the same period, a yellow warning of heavy rainfall has been issued for the districts of Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Sundaragada, Jharsuguda, Baragada, Sambalpur, Sonpur, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamala, Nabarangpur, Malkangiri, Gajapati, and Ganjam.

On August 24-25, an orange warning of heavy to very heavy rain has been sounded for Sundaragada, and Sambalpur districts, while a yellow alert was issued for Jharsuguda, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Subarnapur, and Balangir districts.
