Bhubaneswar: A fresh low-pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal in two days, raising the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rain in several parts of Odisha, meteorological scientists said on Friday.
In its extended range outlook for July 24-30 and July 31-August 6, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that an upper air cyclonic circulation is likely form over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Odisha-West Bengal around Saturday. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is expected to develop in the same region on Sunday.
The system is expected to travel north-westwards across north Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, north Chhattisgarh, east Madhya Pradesh, and southeast Uttar Pradesh over the subsequent three to four days.
The weather agency has forecasted light to moderate rainfall or thundershowers at a few places in every district of Odisha between Friday and Monday. Meteorologists expect this incoming system to trigger widespread precipitation statewide.
Similar forecast has also been made by the Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) of SOA Deemed to be University here.
This system may cause moderate to heavy rainfall with heavy to very heavy precipitation expected at a few places in north and western Odisha districts between July 25 and 28, it said in a bulletin.
The rains are likely in the catchment areas of Brahmani, Baitarani, Subarnarekha, Budhabalanga and Mahanadi rivers spread across districts of Mayurbhanj, Kendujhar, Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Sundaragada, Debagad, Anugola, Sambalpur, Baragad, Kataka, Kendrapada, Khordha, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Nayagad, Sonpur, Boudhagad and Balangir, it said.
