Fresh Low Pressure To Trigger Heavy Showers In Odisha; Rain Intensity To Increase From Sept 13

Bhubaneswar: Heavy rain is likely to resume in Odisha with the likely formation of a fresh cyclonic circulation over north-west and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal around September 12. With conditions favourable for its further intensification into a low-pressure area, the intensity of spell may increase in the state from September 14.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow warning of thunderstorm with lightning on Sunday and Monday. While thunderstorm with lightning may occur at one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Mayurbhanj, Balasore and Bhadrak districts till 8.30 am on Monday. Similar warning has been issued for one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Angul, Deogarh, Sundargarh, Sambalpur and Boudh during the subsequent 24 hours.

There is forecast for heavy rain at one or two places in Angul, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Kandhamal, Khurda, and Ganjam on September 12. The weather agency has also issued thunderstorm with lightning warning for one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Kalahandi and Kandhamal.

On September 13, heavy rain may lash one or two places in Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Angul, Boudh, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Koraput, Cuttack and Rayagada.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places over the districts of Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Bolangir, Boudh, Sonepur, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Khurda, Cuttack, Angul on September 14. Heavy rain may also occur at one or two places in Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Nuapada, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Jagatsinghpur, Keonjhar, it said.

Light to moderate rainfall or thundershower activity are expected at most places in the state on these three days.

According to SOA University’s Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) director Sarat Chandra Sahu, a low-pressure area may form over north-west Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast on September 13. While the state will experience light to moderate rainfall till Monday, rainfall activity will increase from the following day with moderate to heavy showers at most places in coastal, western and northern districts from September 13-15, he added.
