Imphal: Several Naga-inhabited villages along the Imphal–Tamenglong Road in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district came under attack early on Tuesday, with armed groups allegedly setting fire to houses and other properties, local sources said.
Heavy firing was reported in the area from around 4 a.m. Tapon Khunou and Tapon Kullen were among the villages reportedly targeted, while Pipuram, a Liangmai Naga settlement located about eight kilometres from Makui, was also allegedly set ablaze.
There were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries.
The Makui Village Authority condemned the reported attack on Pipuram, calling it an “inhuman act”. In a statement, it alleged that armed Kuki militants entered the village at about 4 a.m., opened indiscriminate fire and later torched houses and other property, as reported by India Today NE.
According to the authority, several households were destroyed in the attack. Food grains and personal belongings were also reportedly lost as flames engulfed the settlement.
The village authority further alleged that the attackers moved towards the main Makui Naga village after targeting Pipuram and continued firing in the direction of the settlement. It claimed that the armed group also attempted to burn houses and inflict casualties in Makui.
The reported violence comes days after four residents of Makui were allegedly killed in an ambush on August 27. The incident took place between Makui Ashang village and Thanamba village, according to the village authority.
The India Today NE stated that the allegations could not be independently verified, and authorities had not issued a statement on the reported attacks.
