From Mumbai Raids To NYT Front Page: Tukaram Mundhe Is Now a ‘Rockstar’

New Delhi: Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe has received rare international recognition for his tough action against food safety violations.

The New York Times featured him on its front page and described him as a “rockstar,” calling him a “food safety celebrity” whose inspections have made enforcement highly visible in Mumbai and across Maharashtra.

The NYT said “no business appears to escape Mundhe’s attention,” with the strapline: “Diners revere him, and owners fear him.” It noted that his surprise checks at restaurants, food stalls, canteens and chains have turned a routine regulatory job into a subject of widespread public discussion.

The global attention is not just about Mundhe’s popularity, but about what it reflects on governance in India.

The BBC reported that his popularity shows how routine enforcement, when done visibly and consistently, can seem extraordinary to citizens used to delays and weak action.

Reuters had earlier profiled him with the headline: “Indian food safety officer shakes up Mumbai, one viral raid at a time”.

Mundhe’s Reaction

Reacting to the NYT report, Mundhe posted the article on X, saying: “Good governance is not about making headlines, but about making a difference”.

“Food safety is ultimately about protecting people, upholding standards and building public trust. When enforcement is fair, fearless and consistent, institutions earn credibility and citizens begin to believe that the system works. The New York Times captures one such story from Maharashtra,” he wrote.

Strict Action Across Maharashtra

Since becoming FDA Commissioner in May 2026, Mundhe has led one of Maharashtra’s most aggressive food safety campaigns. Reports said the department carried out over 12,000 inspections, issued 5,269 improvement notices and suspended 603 food business licences.

Between September 23 and 27, the FDA suspended licences or registration certificates of 30 establishments and seized 50,601.78 kg of food items valued at Rs 1.19 crore during a festive-season drive.

The action covered 13 establishments in Mumbai, six in Konkan division, eight in Pune division and three in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division. Kyani & Co, Colaba Sweet Mart, Arun Vilas Farsan and Subway were among those named.

Officer With A Tough Image

A 2005-batch Maharashtra cadre IAS officer, Mundhe secured All India Rank 20 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 2004. He studied Political Science at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University and comes from a small farming family, as reported by NDTV.

He has served in Nanded, Washim, Jalna, Solapur, Navi Mumbai, Nashik, Nagpur and Pune, holding roles such as District Collector, Municipal Commissioner and PMPML chief.

As Solapur Collector, he won the state government’s Best District Collector Award for 2015-16 for water management and transparent governance, earning the title “Waterman of Maharashtra.”

Known for his uncompromising style, Mundhe has been transferred more than 24 times in nearly two decades of service.
