FTII & BPFTIO Begin Film Appreciation Course In Bhubaneswar

In a first, the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune in association with Biju Patnaik Film and Television Institute of Orissa (BPFTIO), Cuttack kick started a week long Film Appreciation Course at Tribal Museum in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday.

People from varied age groups and profession including students, participated in the course which will continue till February 20. While inaugurating the course BPFTIO Chairman and well known lyricist Devdas Chhotray said, “If we do not go through the layers it is difficult to understand a good film. Film has its own language and it is the most powerful art of 20th Century”.

Addressing on the occasion Director, Technical Education and Training, Odisha, Balwant Singh said, “This is the first time country’s most credible institute organising this course here. In future we would like to have more learning opportunities for film lovers in Bhubaneswar”.

Acclaimed film maker and FTII alumni Raju Mishra described how to develop a taste of good cinema. Starting from 18 year to 74 year old have joined the course to enlighten themselves.

“Film is a medium in which all art forms are being used. The audio-visual medium is a combination of picture, sound, sequencing which creates magic, when seen in social isolation”, said the film maker and Course Director, FTII, Pankaj Saxena, adding that this course will introduce students to the vast area of film history and development of cinematic language. 

Another FTII alumni and film maker Munish Bhardwaj also described about invention and early development of cinema. During the session, the students were shown French film-maker George Melies’s ‘A Trip To the Moon’, a scene from Hollywood thriller ‘Psycho’ and Charlie Chaplin’s ‘The Kid’.
