Rourkela: The Plant Site Police on Thursday registered cases against 500 persons for participating in a funeral procession at Nala Road in the city in gross violation of the COVID-19 guidelines.
Rourkela SP K Siva Subramani said while 20 persons are allowed to participate in funeral activities, hundreds of people had participated in the procession in gross violation of the COVID guidelines on Monday. “Police have identified 500 people against whom action will be taken under the provision of the Epidemic Diseases Act,” he added.
The incident that took place on June 7 night came to light after a video of the procession went viral on social media. The rally was taken out at Nala Road after a young boy belonging to minority community was killed in an attack by a gang reportedly due to old rivalry.
A few days back, people of the same area, which was declared containment zone after one person tested corona positive, had pelted stones at health officials who had gone to trace the contacts of the positive case.
