Koraput: An official of Gas Authority Of India Limited (GAIL) was critically injured after being stabbed during extortion bid by miscreants in Laxmipur area of Odisha’s Koraput district.
The victim was identified as RP Singh, a site supervisor of the Central PSU. While no complaint has been registered so far, the incident has triggered widespread anger among locals as the crime was committed in broad daylight, sources said. Videos and pictures of the incident have gone viral on social media.
Singh was reportedly stabbed over 50 times with a knife and broken beer bottle by some miscreants following a dispute over extortion money at Laxmipur railway colony road on Sunday. Four youths are suspected to be involved in the attack
The man was first taken to the nearby community health centre for preliminary treatment and later shifted to Saheed Laxman Naik Medical College and Hospital (SLN-MCH) at the district headquarters.
Meanwhile, company officials alleged that three similar extortion attempts had been made in Laxmipur and Kairigumma areas earlier, but no step has been taken in this regard.
Local residents claimed that such crimes have been increasing in Laxmipur nearby areas during the last couple of months and police need to step up vigil and patrolling to curb the activities of anti-social elements.
