Cuttack: In a major crackdown, Commissionerate Police on Thursday busted a gambling racket in Cuttack and seized Rs 18 lakh in cash besides arresting 13 persons involved in the illegal act.
Police said the racket was unearthed during a raid conducted by Mangalabag police at a hotel located in Bajrakabati area of the
city following specific information about illegal gambling.
During the operation, police caught several persons allegedly engaged in gambling. Acting swiftly, officers recovered cash of Rs 18 lakh from the spot.
The police team also seized 14 mobile phones, six motorcycles and two cars during the raid. The seizure indicates the scale of the operation and points to an organised setup allegedly being run from the hotel.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused persons hail from different districts, including Cuttack, Bhadrak, Ganjam, Khurda and Puri.
The arrested persons included several professional criminals with several serious cases already registered against them. Further investigation is underway.
