New Delhi: A gang posing as visitors allegedly robbed a house in northeast Delhi’s New Usmanpur on Sunday, making off with cash and jewellery worth nearly Rs 9 lakh after tricking the family into letting them inside, police said. The complainant, Harishchandra, was not at home when the incident unfolded.
According to police, the men reached the residence around 1:30 pm and called Harishchandra, a social activist, saying they had come for a meeting. He told them he was away and that they should have informed him before coming. His phone then switched off because the battery ran low.
Once the call disconnected, the suspects allegedly told Harishchandra’s wife and three children that he had asked them to come in and have tea while he was returning home.
The men then entered the house and took the family hostage. Family members said the intruders tied their hands with ropes and pushed bandages into their mouths to keep them from shouting.
Harishchandra’s relatives said the accused were armed and repeatedly pointed guns at their heads.
The gang stayed inside for about an hour, searching the house before escaping through the back gate.
The family later informed the police, after which teams reached the spot and started an investigation.
Police said about Rs 9 lakh in cash and jewellery were looted during the incident.
The robbers also took away the digital video recorder of the CCTV system installed at the house.
CCTV footage from nearby areas is being scanned to identify the suspects, and police are trying to trace their escape route and check whether the gang may be linked to similar crimes in the city.
