Bhubaneswar: The anti-extortion wing of the Commissionerate Police on Saturday arrested gangster Raja Acharya for demanding extortion money in Bhubamneswar.
Police Commissioner Sudhanshu Sarangi said Raja, who is building a house on government land, was extorting a sum of Rs 20,000 every month from a person.
“The Commissionerate Police will not spare if anyone is found extorting money,” Sarangi added.
On Friday, Sarangi had informed that a special drive called “No To Extortion” was launched in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar to put an end to the collection of extortion money by criminals.
Police will soon hold a meeting with leading businessmen, contractors and citizens in the twin cities in this regard, he had said.
He further said that an anti-extortion task force will function under the Additional Police Commissioner (ACP), Rekha Lohani, and a Quick Action Team (QAT) will assist the task force.
This apart, a special helpline number will be issued to enable people to lodge complaints or give information about any such activities in their areas. The names of callers/complainants will be kept secret and such persons will be awarded, he had said.
