Cuttack: Two persons were arrested by excise department sleuths from Tangi area of Odisha’s Cuttack district while illegally transporting a huge quantity of ganja.
One of the accused persons identified himself as a former Uttar Pradesh MLA in a bid to escape.
Acting on a tip off, excise officials launched an operation and intercepted a car near Tangi toll gate on Wednesday. There were two persons in the car and one of them identified himself as a former MLA of Uttar Pradesh in a bid to scare the excise team.
The vehicle was thoroughly searched and over one quintal ganja was seized from a specially designed secret chamber, Excise DSP P K Das said.
The value of the consignment was estimated at over Rs ten lakh. The ganja was being transported from Andhra Pradesh to Uttar Pradesh.
The two persons, identified as Amzad and Tabrez, were arrested and further investigation is underway. Further details are awaited.
