Bhubaneswar: The excise department busted a racket and seized a huge quantity of ganja (cannabis) in Bhubaneswar on Monday.
Sources said that excise officials raided a duplex near Kolathia in Khandagiri area and seized 10 quintals of ganja, worth around Rs 50 lakh. One person was arrested.
The accused has been identified as Subal Samantaray, a resident of Balasore district.
Samantaray was involved in ganja smuggling for several years, the sources said. He is a inter-state ganja smuggler and used to supply it to the other states. He used to supply ganja packets to Bhubaneswar from Mohana area of Gajapati district. He told the authorities that he was alone in the trade.
“We’ve seized over seven quintals of ganja, estimated to cost around Rs 50,000. We have arrested Samantray in this connection. He used to smuggle ganja to Kolkata. Further investigations are on,” an excise official said.
