Bhubaneswar: Panic spread in Chandaka area of Bhubaneswar following gas leak from a chemical factory in the local industrial estate on Saturday.
According to sources, some locals detected bad smell coming out of Shivam Chemicals, which has been closed for some time, in Chandaka Industrial Estate in the evening and informed the police.
Fire services personnel along with a team from local police station rushed to the spot. Later, personnel of three Fire Brigades were engaged in containing the gas leak.
A special team of Fire services, wearing masks and protective uniforms and armed with modern equipment, was deployed to detect and cap the leakage of chlorin gas in the abandoned factory.
They detected a cylinder containing sodium hypochlorite or bleach, was leaking. The team sprayed neutralising chemical compound at the cylinder and capped the leak.
The police stopped the movement of vehicles and pedestrians on all roads leading to the industrial estate. The busy road from Patia to Infocity has been blocked for the vehicles, the sources said.
Director General of Fire Services Sudhanshu Sarangi, in a statement, said the situation was under control as the gas detection machine did not show any sign of harm for human life. The cylinder has been shifted to an isolated place amid tight security and with safety measures, he added.
