New Delhi: Cricketer-turned-politician Gautam Gambhir, a BJP member of Parliament (MP), is set to launch ‘Jan Rasoi’ canteens which will serve lunch to the needy at Re 1 in his parliamentary constituency of East Delhi.
The former India opener will inaugurate the first ‘Jan Rasoi’ in Gandhi Nagar area on Thursday, Hindustan Times reported.
“I have always felt that everybody has the right to healthy and hygienic food irrespective of caste, creed, religion or financial condition. It is saddening to see the homeless and destitute not being able to get even two square meals a day,” the World Cup winner said.
According to a statement issued by his office, the menu for lunch will be rice, lentils and vegetable curries. Funded by Gautam Gambhir Foundation and the MP’s personal resources, the project has no government support.
Gambhir’s target is to open at least one ‘Jan Rasoi’ canteen in each of the 10 assembly constituencies in East Delhi.
The first ‘Jan Rasoi’ at Gandhi Nagar will have a capacity to seat 100 people at a time. To start with, however, only 50 people can eat together because of COVID-19 restrictions.
