Mumbai: General Motors (GM) will be closing its Indian chapter completely by shutting down the Talegaon manufacturing facility on December 24.
This is the American company’s last factory in India. In 2017, GM had sold its Halol facility to its Chinese partner SAIC, which is using it to manufacture Morris Garages (MG) vehicles.
GM started Indian operations in 1996 with the Opel brand. Later, it brought in the Chevrolet brand here.
GM had signed a deal with China’s Great Wall Motors in January 2020 to sell the Talegaon plant. However, the Rs 2,000 crore deal was put on hold following clash of Indian and Chinese soldiers at the border.
The Talegaon facility used to employ 1,800 people and made cars that were exported to Mexico.
