New Delhi: Former Jammu and Kashmir lieutenant governor Girish Chandra Murmu has been appointed as the new Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India.
The retired Odia IAS officer had resigned ahead of his tenure on Wednesday, the first anniversary of abrogation of Article 370. He had assumed charge in October last year as the first Lt governor of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
Murmu will replace Rajiv Mehrishi, a 1978-batch IAS officer of the Rajasthan cadre, as the CAG. He is the first Odia to be appointed to the post.
A native of Betnoti in Mayurbhanj district, the 1985-batch Gujarat cadre IAS officer was the principal secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi when the latter was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. He is considered to be a close confidante of the Prime Minister.
