Koraput: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed Odisha government to pay Rs three lakh as compensation to the family of a girl student who died after falling into a container of boiling dal in Koraput district.
After hearing a petition of RTI activist Radhakant Tripathy, the NHRC directed the chief secretary to make the payment by October 15 and submit a report in this regard.
The incident took place at the Government Girls’ High School, Baligaon under Baipariguda block on November 21, 2014. While the girl student, Basanti Barik, was standing in a queue for mid-day meal, she lost sense and fell into the container of boiling dal. Subsequently, she died.
Earlier, the state government had paid Rs one lakh to Basanti’s family on the direction of the NHRC. After considering the reasons and situation that led to the incident, the Commission stated that the amount was inadequate and directed the government to pay Rs two lakh more towards compensation to the minor student’s family.
