Girls Close In On Boys In Taking Up Studies Outside Odisha

New Delhi: Parents are becoming much more aware of their daughters’ education and are not holding them back from taking up studies outside the state. The just released Census 2011 data on migration has revealed that the more than 1.50 lakh girls moved out of Odisha for education in the last decade.

In fact, Odisha is among the leading states in the country, which has witnessed more and more girls migrating beyond the state boundaries for studies. The others being Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. As per the Census figures, the jump in these states is four times higher than boys at 52 per cent.

Here are the figures …

Migration For Education:

  • Boys 1,50,655
  • Girls 1,29,485

Migration For Jobs: 

  • Men 7,14,603
  • Women 1,36,760
  • At the All India level,  women migrating for employment increased by 31 per cent as compared to just 10 per cent for men.

Migration For Business: 

  • Men 1,89,607
  • Women 25,401

Migration After Marriage:

  • Men 2,03,235
  • Women 81,38,036

According to the Census data, of the 455 million migrants, women constituted 68 per cent, the prime reason being marriage.
