Suez: A massive container ship, which had been stuck in Suez Canal for almost a week, was finally set free by salvage teams on Monday.
The world heaved a sigh of relief as the fully-laden 220,000-ton skyscraper-sized Ever Given vessel had stopped global trade through one of the world’s most vital maritime arteries. The massive ‘traffic’ jam held up $9 billion each day in global trade, as over 360 vessels — carrying stuff varying from crude oil to cattle – were piled up on either end of the canal, while hundreds of ships were forced to take a roundabout, longer route during the already crisis-ridden coronavirus pandemic.
“We pulled it off!” said Peter Berdowski, CEO of the firm hired to extract the Ever Given. “I am excited to announce that our team of experts, working in close collaboration with the Suez Canal Authority, successfully refloated the Ever Given … thereby making free passage through the Suez Canal possible again.”
