New Delhi: Two popular Indian mithais have claimed the top spot in the current dessert rankings in the world. Rasmalai, the traditional cheese dessert with roots in West Bengal secured the 31st position, while Kaju Katli, the delectable Indian sweet ranked 41st on the TasteAtlas, an experiential food guide’s latest rankings.
France’s classic Crepes clinched the top slot, while Brazil’s Bombocado, a special coconut-flavoured pastry secured the second position. Peru’s iconic Queso helado, a dessert similar to ice cream in texture, took the third position on the list followed by Italy’s iconic Tiramisu on the fourth.
France had two more entries in the top 10. While Creme Brulee grabbed the fifth position, Souffle au Chocolat was placed in the ninth position. Baklava, which is loved for its layers of phyllo dough, honey, and nuts, took the 27th spot on the rankings. Brownies and chocolate chip cookies, rounded out the list at 49th and 50th positions, respectively.
The guide’s website describes Ras malai as a popular Indian dessert consisting of white cream, sugar, milk, and cardamom-flavored paneer cheese known as chhana. “Almonds, cashews, and saffron are often added to the dessert. Ras malai is of West Bengali origins, and is sometimes described as a rich cheesecake without a crust,” it read.
It describes Kaju Katli, also known as kaju barfi, as a traditional Indian dessert characterised by its diamond shape, made with cashew nuts, sugar, cardamom powder, and ghee butter. “This sweet treat often comes wrapped in an edible silver foil, signifying luxury and appreciation for the consumer,” it read.
While it is traditionally consumed during the Diwali festival, it is also an ideal gift for friends and family on special occasions. It also mentioned how saffron or dried fruits can be added to the dessert to enhance its flavours. “In Indian culture, it is believed that by consuming kaju katli, one brings good luck and prosperity to his home,” it read.
