Google Announces 10% Job Cuts; This Is What Sundar Pichai Said About Latest Layoffs

New Delhi: Google had fired 12,000 employees in 2023. Now, the tech giant has announced another round of layoffs — a 10 per cent reduction in workforce in managerial roles, including directors and vice-presidents.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed the decision during an all-hands meeting, according to Business Insider. He mentioned the company’s ongoing efforts to streamline operations amid growing competition from rivals like OpenAI.

While some of the jobs have been transitioned to individual contributor roles, some roles have been eliminated.

According to a Google insider, Pichai also spoke about redefining ‘Googleyness’, a term used internally to describe the company’s culture and values.

“It’s time to update what Googleyness means for today’s Google,” he told employees, urging them to adapt and align with the modern challenges.

Pichai had stated in 2022 that he wanted Google to be 20 per cent more efficient. That was followed by 12,000 job cuts in 2023.

According to layoffs.fyi, 539 tech companies have laid off 150,034 employees in 2024 thus far. The corresponding figure in 2023 was 2,64,220 firings by 1,193 companies.
