San Francisco: Google has decided to let most of its employees to work from home till July 2021.
“To give employees the ability to plan ahead, we are extending our global voluntary work from home option through June 30, 2021 for roles that don’t need to be in the office,” Google chief executive Sundar Pichai wrote in an email to employees on Monday.
The decision is going to benefit nearly all of the 2 lakh Google employees and contractors worldwide.
Most tech firms are expected to extend their remote working policies following Google’s decision.
In India, 95 per cent employee of the top 5 IT companies — TCS, Infosys, HCL, Wipro & Tech Mahindra — are working from home. This means that more than 10.81 lakh IT employees are working remotely. TCS revealed that only 1 per cent of its total workforce is currently working from offices.
The IT industry, however, sought permanent relaxations in these norms, even as the six-month extension helps address immediate priorities.
