Govt Delays Introduction Of Bills On ‘One Nation, One Election’ In Lok Sabha, Cites No Reason

New Delhi: The Central government decided to delay the introduction of bills on ‘One Nation, One Election’ in the Lok Sabha, according to the revised list of business of the Parliament issued during the ongoing winter session on Sunday.

The two bills in this regard— Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill— were earlier scheduled for introduction on Monday (December 16). This schedule was mentioned in the initial list of business released on Friday. But the bills have now been removed from the agenda for December 15, reported the India Today.

However, it is not clear why government has delayed the introduction of these bills. According to sources, these bills may be introduced later this week after the completion of financial business. Among the matters listed for discussion on Monday is the passage of the first batch of supplementary demands for grants.

Despite of this removal, the government retains the alternative to introduce legislative proposals through ‘Supplementary List of Business’ with the Speaker’s permission.

The two bills are aimed at facilitating simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. These were circulated among Members of Parliament last week according to the parliamentary procedures.

The Winter Session of Parliament, which began on December 4, will conclude on December 20.
