Bhubaneswar: The state Government on Tuesday felicitated Omkar Hota, the doctor rushed to a remote village in Malkangiri to help a woman delivery her baby and later carried her on cot for 8 kms to the nearby hospital.
“Today, we have honored Omkar Hota for his exemplary commitment in walking the extra mile in bringing health care to some of the remote villages in Malkangiri,” said Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
The incident, which was reported on November 1, also inspired the government to institute an award after Utkalmani Gopabandhu Das to recognise dedicated, selfless and exemplary service in healthcare sector.
“Utkalmani Gopabandhu Das is a symbol of sacrifice and selfless service. In his memory, Utkalmani Gopabandhu Das award for dedicated selfless service shall be awarded in the health sector from this year,” the chief minister added.
Health Minister Pratap Jena said that the health department is proud of Hota’s remarkable efforts in saving the life of the woman and her newborn.
Hota said the mother’s critical prompted him to rush to the village and assist in the delivery. “I had never thought that my work will come to the limelight and I will be felicitated by Chief Minister. This is a proud moment for me,” he said.
