New Delhi: The Central government on Thursday launched the e-SHRAM portal to maintain a database of workers in the unorganized sector.
““For the first time in the history of India, a system is being made to register 38 crore unorganized workers. It will not only register them but would also be helpful in delivering of various social security schemes being implemented by the Central and State Governments,” Union Minister for Labour and Employment Bhupender Yadav tweeted after launching the portal on Thursday.
The Centre had announced the need to set up a national database for unorganized workers after the acute migrant crisis during the COVID-19 lockdown last year.
The objective is the integration of social security schemes of the government. Around 38 crore unorganized workers will be registered.

* It’s a single-point reference to help authorities reach out and track unorganized workers and offer assistance in times of crisis
* Around 38 crore unorganized workers including construction labourers, migrant workforce, street vendors and domestic workers, among others will be registered
* A worker can register using his/her Aadhaar card number and bank account details, besides filling other necessary details like date of birth, home town, mobile number and social category
* A national toll-free number 14434 has been launched to assist and address queries of workers seeking to register themselves
* The workers will be issued an e-SHRAM card with a 12-digit unique number
* Rs 2 lakh accidental insurance and Rs 1 lakh partial disability cover will be provided to every registered worker
* Details of workers will be shared by state governments and departments.
