Your Car Registration Fee To Be Dearer By 50 Times! Here’s Why

New Delhi: Having displayed its seriousness to put the sale of electric vehicles on fast track, the Narendra Modi government is now contemplating a steep hike in registration and renewal fee of both new and old vehicles, according to a report in news portal The Print.

The aim of some new proposals is to deter vehicular pollution and encourage people to opt for clean transport solutions by attempting to replace the existing passenger fleet of cars with battery-operated or electric vehicles, the report added.

The key proposals are:

#The registration fee for passenger cars could go up from Rs 1,000 to Rs 50,000 (a 400% hike).

#The registration fee for trucks could be hiked from Rs 1,500 to Rs 20,000.

#The renewal fee of old cars that are over 15 years old could go up from Rs 1,000 to Rs 10,000.

The report said the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways under Nitin Gadkari has given its approval to the proposals, the notification of which could come out soon.

Data compiled by consultancy firm AT Kearney said at present, about 7 lakh trucks, buses and taxis manufactured before December 31, 2000 are plying on India roads, contributing 15-20 per cent of vehicular pollution.

While the Modi government is aggressively pushing for only electric vehicle sales in India after 2030, a cut in the registration fee for the electric vehicle has also been proposed recently by the government.

The fitment committee of GST is also examining a proposal to slash GST rates in electric vehicles from 12 per cent to five per cent.
