Govt Rejigs EV Charging Infrastructure Policy

The Indian government has revised guidelines for EV charging infrastructure development in the country.

The new guidelines will supersede the existing one issued by the Ministry of Power in December, 2018. The new policies and specifications are more consumer-friendly, said Union Minister RK Singh.

There will be at least one charging station in every 3 sq km in cities, and one every 25 km on intra-city highways. All major cities will be covered in the first phase. For intra-city travel, fast charging stations will be setup every 100 km by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE).

As most EV charging would take place at homes or at offices, there will be guidelines for private charging at residences/offices and distribution companies (DISCOMs) may facilitate the same.

Public charging stations (PCS) will be a de-licensed activity and any individual/entity is free to set up public charging stations.

The charger standards specified are CCS, CHAdeMO, Type-2 AC and Bharat AC 001.

The tariff to be charged from public charging stations and domestic consumers for private chargers have been mentioned in the guidelines.
