New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day speech mentioned that the central government will reconsider the minimum age of marriage for women, which is currently 18 years.
“We have set up a committee to reconsider the minimum age of marriage for girls. The Centre will take a decision after the committee submits its report,” he said.
Earlier on June 2, the Union Ministry for Women and Child Development had set up a task force to examine the possibility of increasing the age of marriage for women from 18 to 21 years as a measure to lower Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) and improve nutritional levels, apart from other initiatives, reported The Indian Express.
