Govt Writes To NCTE To Restore Recognition To 16 Teacher Education Institutions In Odisha

Bhubaneswar: In order facilitate recruitment to fill up large scale vacancies of teacher posts, the Odisha government has written to the National Council of Teachers Education (NCTE) to restore the recognition to 16 Teacher Education Institutions (TEIs) in the state.

In a letter to the Chairman of NCTE, Principal Secretary, Higher Education department, Saswat Mishra on Friday expressed concern over the restrictions on the TEIs at a time when the state needs trained teachers urgently.

Mishra said Odisha is the only state which has only the government Teacher Training Institutions to meet the needs of trained teachers in elementary, secondary and higher secondary schools. Due to withdrawal of recognition to TEIs, it has become impossible to meet the demand of the trained teachers, he added.

He further said the Odisha Public Service Commission (OPSC) has started the recruitment process of teachers. While 67 teachers of Geography, Mathematics, Political Science and Botany have already joined the TEIs, 36 teachers of History and Economics subjects have been issued appointment orders, he added.

Stating that appointment of teachers in other subjects will be completed soon, he requested NCTE to consider the appeal petitions filed by the TEIs for restoration of recognition so that they can start the courses from 2022-23 academic session.

It may be noted that the recognition of these institutions, offering BEd, BHEd and MEd courses, was withdrawn two years back for not having required number of teachers.
