Bhadrak: The act of revenge turned out to be that of greed in the sensational double murder and rape case of Bhadrak.
The accused Gopinath Mohanty, who had earlier cited ‘revenge’ as the reason behind the chilling crime, reportedly told police that he had killed Rabi Beuria and his wife for Rs 2 lakh.
The incident took place at Talasitha village under Dhamnagar police limits in Bhadrak on Sunday.
“The family had received Rs 2 lakh after a settlement in some legal case a few days ago. Since the accused often visited the family, he knew about the cash at home and therefore plotted to kill them,” said SP (Bhadrak) B Gangadhar.
The SP ruled out past enmity behind the gruesome murder.
Earlier in the day, Gopinath had confessed to the crime stating that he killed the couple since they had been troubling his parents for years.
In the statement to police, the accused admitted to have pushed Rabi into a canal after getting him drunk. He later killed his wife by attacking her with a stone pestle in their house.
He looted jewellery and cash from the house before fleeing Bhadrak.
Gopinath was nabbed from Chandrasekharpur in Bhubaneswar last night.
On Monday, the SP had informed that the daughter of the deceased person was raped by the accused. He had escaped from the spot after tying her hands and legs.
“The biological samples collected from the room and bedroom where the incident took place on Sunday night, indicate that the daughter of the deceased woman was sexually assaulted. The samples have been sent to the forensic laboratory for a thorough examination,” he had said.
