Shopian: An army captain was charged with killing three youths in a fake encounter in Shopian, in Jammu & Kashmir, on July 18 last year. A chargesheet has now been filed in the case, which states that he did it for a reward of Rs 20 lakh.
Capt. Bhoopendra Singh of 62 Rashtriya Rifles had hatched a conspiracy with two civilians to “grab” the reward money. They fired at the three victims before his men could cordon off the area, the chargesheet states.
“By staging the encounter, Capt. Bhoopendra Singh and two other civilians also purposefully destroyed evidence of the real crime that they have committed and also have been purposefully projecting false information as part of a criminal conspiracy hatched between them with motive to grab prize money of Rs 20 lakh,” PTI quoted from the police chargesheet.
Capt. Bhoopinder, currently in Army custody, is almost certain to face court martial proceedings.
In his statement to the police, Capt. Bhoopinder said that he had to fire as the militants who were hiding tried to escape.
The chargesheet mentions that the accused captain “furnished false information to mislead the senior officer and for getting” an FIR lodged to “tailor fit his motive of grabbing prize money in furtherance of criminal conspiracy”.
