Bhubaneswar: A woman home guard, posted at Chandrasekharpur Police Station in Bhubaneswar, allegedly died by suicide on Wednesday night.
According to sources, the deceased, identified as Sujata, was rushed to Capital Hospital by her family members last night after she allegedly consumed poison at her apartment at Mandap Basti in Chandrasekharpur area. She was later shifted to a private hospital, where she died while undergoing treatment.
Sujata was reportedly under severe mental distress following her husband’s death seven months ago. She was battling depression and had sleep issues. She would frequently cry at night and also attempted to end her life while struggling to cope with her loss and the entire responsibility of her family, the sources added.
Her family said that Sujata’s condition remained unchanged despite medical advice and efforts.
The sole breadwinner of the family, she is survived by her mother-in-law, a son with Autism Spectrum Disorder, and a daughter.
Police have registered a case of unnatural death and handed over the body to her family after postmortem.
Meanwhile, the Home Guard Association has sought government support for Sujata’s children and arranged financial aid from their funds.
