Bhubaneswar: The mortal remains of Odia jawan Saroj Kumar Das, who lost his life in the Sikkim flash floods, arrived at the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Bhubaneswar airport on Saturday.
Soon after the body reached the state capital, the jawan was accorded a guard of honour.
Governor Ganeshi Lal, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and a host of dignitaries offered tributed to the late jawan after the body arrived at the airport.
Saroj was among the 23 army personnel who had gone missing due to a flash flood in the Teesta River in North Sikkim.
Thereafter, the mortal remains were taken to the battalion unit office and then to his native place in Dhenkanal district. The district administration of Dhenkanal will pay last resepect to Saroj, acknowledging his sacrifice for the nation.
The mortal remains will be taken in a procession to Kendudip in Dighi panchayat under Kamakshanagar area of the district. The final journey will conclude at the village crematorium, where the last rites will be performed.
The district administration has assured Saroj Das’s family of unwavering support during this challenging time. He recently got married in February and has been serving as an EME Jawan in the army since 2012.
A havildar in the Indian Army, Saroj was recruited in the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME) wing of the Indian army in 2012. He had married just 7 months back and got a promotion in September, his brother had earlier to the media.
He had visited home about two months back and the family had received a call from him a day before the incident, his brother said.
