Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar railway station has won the ‘Eat Right Station’ certification from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) for the quality of food served to passengers.

Bhubaneswar is the sixth railway station in the country to get the tag after Chandigarh, Anand Vihar in Delhi, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (Mumbai), Mumbai Central and Vadodara.

Yamini Sarangi, state Food Safety Commissioner, handed over the certificate to Khurda Road Divisional Railway Manager Rinkesh Roy on Thursday.

The Bhubaneswar railway station, with 29 food stalls, received a four-star rating. “The 4-star rating indicates exemplary efforts made by the railway authorities at this station in ensuring that safe and hygienic food is available to railway passengers. All the catering stalls at Bhubaneswar railway station are provided with food licence certificates. The vendors have medical fitness certificates too,” the East Coast Railway (ECoR) said in a statement.

“It is an honour for the Khurda Road Division and it also makes us more responsible to maintain this standard of hygiene and food quality for our passengers in future at Bhubaneswar station. Efforts are being made to include Puri, Cuttack and other important stations of the division in the ‘Eat Right Station’ category,” Roy said.

The certification is awarded to railway stations after an FSSAI-empanelled third-party audit with ratings from 1 to 5.

The certification is part of the ‘Eat Right India’ movement by FSSAI to transform the country’s food system to ensure safe, healthy and sustainable food for all Indians.

Dr PK Mohapatra, Director (Food Safety), BGS Rao, Chief Medical Superintendent, Khurda Road, and Amitesh Anand, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Khurda Road, were present on the occasion.
