Gyanvapi Mosque Case: Varanasi Court Says ‘No’ To Carbon Dating Of Shivling

Varanasi: The District and Sessions Court here rejected the petition filed by the Hindu side demanding carbon dating of the structure which they had claimed to be a Shivling.

It was found in a reservoir inside the Gyanvapi Mosque during survey work on May 16.

The petitioners had claimed that the said Shivling was part of the property, and thereby demanded carbon dating and other scientific tests of the structure.

The Gyanvapi Masjid committee had opposed the demand for carbon dating, which is is a scientific process to ascertain the age of an archaeological object.

Following the discovery of the Shivling-like structure, a petition was filed in the Varanasi court claiming that the mosque was built after a Hindu structure had been demolished on the orders of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.

The Gyanvapi mosque is located next to the Kashi Vishwanath temple.
