Hail Indian Prodigy: PM Modi, Mentor V Anand Laud Gukesh’s Historic World Chess Triumph

New Delhi: It was indeed a red letter day for Indian sport as the country got its second world chess champion.

D Gukesh’s triumph was even more special as he outwitted defending champion Chinese Grandmaster Ding Liren to emerge as the youngest-ever winner of the FIDE World Chess Championship.

No sooner had Gukesh sealed the decisive win in the 14th and final game of the contest than congratulatory messages started pouring in. Prime Minister Narendra was among the first to congratulate the 18-year-old prodigy from Chennai.

“Congratulations to Gukesh D on his remarkable accomplishment. This is the result of his unparalleled talent, hard work and unwavering determination. His triumph has not only etched his name in the annals of chess history but has also inspired millions of young minds to dream big and pursue excellence. My best wishes for his future endeavours @DGukesh,” Modi tweeted.

Gukesh’s mentor Viswanathan Anand, the trailblazer who won the World Chess championship a quarter of a century ago, revelled in the proud moment scripted by his protégé.

“Congratulations! It’s a proud moment for chess, a proud moment for India, a proud moment for WACA (WestBridge Anand Chess Academy), and for me, a very personal moment of pride. Ding played a very exciting match and showed the champion he is,” Anand posted on X.

Abhinav Bindra, India’s first individual Olympic gold-medallist, saluted Gukesh’s brilliance.

“Congratulations, Gukesh, on becoming the World Chess Champion! Your brilliance, determination, and grace under pressure have made the entire nation proud. You’ve not just won a title but inspired a generation to dream big. Wishing you even greater success ahead! 🇮🇳🏆♟️ #Gukesh #WorldChampion,” Bindra wrote on X.

Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar posted a heartwarming message for Gukesh.

“In a game of 64 squares, you’ve opened a world of endless possibilities. Congratulations, @DGukesh , on becoming the 18th World Champion at just 18! Following in Vishy’s footsteps, you’re now guiding the next wave of Indian chess prodigies. 🇮🇳♟️🏆” wrote Tendulkar.
