Nayagarh: Hardcore criminal Chagala was killed in an exchange of fire with police at Nabaghanpur village under Sadar police limits in Nayagarh district on Thursday night.
The criminal had sustained bullet injuries in both his legs and was rushed to the district headquarters hospital. He was later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack where he succumbed to his injuries.
Acting on a tip-off regarding Chagala’s presence at Nabaghanpur village, a police team raided the spot. Seeing the police party, he opened fire on them following which the former too retaliated back. The criminal sustained bullet injuries in both his legs below the knee. However, two of his associates managed to escape during the gunfight.
According to police sources, Chagala was a close aide of gangster Tito, who was arrested after a similar encounter with Special Task Force (STF) of Odisha Crime Branch near Chandikhole of Jajpur district with police on June 30.
Chagala, who was a resident of Raniula in Cuttack district, had more than 50 criminal cases, including murder, bombing and extortion, pending against him at different police stations across the state.
