New Delhi: Haridwar in Uttarakhand reported 594 fresh COVID-19 cases on Tuesday. This took the city’s active caseload to 2,812, as thousands gathered to take holy dips in the Ganges for the 13th day of Mahakumbh. Haridwar had registered 408 cases on Monday.
Uttarakhand reported 1,925 COVID-19 cases with 13 casualties in the last 24 hours.
Approximately a million people have gathered at the banks of the Ganges to take part in the months-long “Kumbh Mela” or pitcher festival.
Nearly a lakh had gathered for the holy dip of the auspicious Shahi Snan (ritualistic bath) on Monday, violating COVID protocols issued by the Union Health Ministry.
The devotees were seen without a mask, with no social distancing as India registered over 1.6 lakh COVID-19 cases on Tuesday.
Besides the devotees, thousands of seers, representing 13 Akhadas, offered prayers at the packed Mahakumbh Mela.
Uttarakhand has reported 1,12,071 COVID-19 cases so far with the toll reaching 1,780.
