Haryana Waives Interest On Crop Loans, Announces MSP For 14 Crops

Chandigarh: In an effort to ease the challenges faced by farmers, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced waiver of interest and penalties on certain crop loans.

Responding to the grievances voiced by protesting farmers at Punjab-Haryana borders, Khattar reiterated his government’s commitment to welfare of farmers, emphasising the provision of Minimum Support Price (MSP) for 14 crops.

Presenting his fifth consecutive budget, Khattar announced exemption of interest and penalties on crop loans acquired from Primary Agriculture Credit Societies (PACS), provided the loans were obtained by September 30, 2023, and the principal amount is repaid by May 31, 2024. Any additional interest or penalties incurred thereafter must be settled. This applies to farmers registered with Meri Fasal Mera Byora (MFMB).

Khattar also announced that the state government would procure 14 crops at MSP. Among primary demands of the protesting farmers is a firm assurance of crop procurement at MSP.

During his budget speech, the CM revealed the introduction of a portal where farmers can submit online claims in case of crop damage. To date, assistance amounting to Rs 297 crore has been provided.

In response to Opposition parties’ inquiries regarding imposition of the National Security Act (NSA) on protesting farmers, Khattar reaffirmed his dedication to welfare of farmers, citing his own upbringing as the son of a farmer.

In a bid to alleviate tensions, the Haryana Police withdrew its decision to enforce NSA provisions against certain farmer leaders engaged in the ongoing protests.
