HC Tells Odisha Doctors To Write Medicine Names In Capital Letters

Cuttack: The Orissa High Court has directed doctors of all government and private hospitals in the state to write the names of medicines in capital letters while prescribing them for patients.

Justice Sanjib Kumar Panigrahi issued the directive while granting interim bail to a person on this matter.

According to the case, one Krishnapad Mandal, who was arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, had submitted medical documents in the HC regarding the health of his wife. But the court failed to read out the names of the medicines as they were illegible.

Earlier on September 21, 2016, the Medical Council of India (MCI) had issued a notice asking doctors with bad handwriting to write the names of the medicines in capital letters.

Stating that states like Jharkhand and Maharashtra have implemented the MCI order, the court directed the chief secretary to take necessary steps in this regard in consultation with the MCI and Centre.
