Headless Body Case: Bhubaneswar DCP Rules Out Identification Through Aadhaar; Know Why

Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police here are still groping in dark about the identity of a woman, whose headless body was found near a bush on the Andharua-Daspur road on February 4.

“Posters are being circulated on social media, pasted on vehicles entering and leaving the city and all calls and information are being verified. Since the identity of the victim is yet to be ascertained and the accused identified, the body has been preserved in the mortuary. All possible angles in the case are being investigated,” informed Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Uma Shankar Dash.

A special team is visiting all slums for any clue on the deceased, he added.

The DCP, however, ruled out the possibility of identifying the beheaded woman, whose severed head is yet to be found, from the Aadhaar database using her fingerprint.

He clarified that at least two inputs – fingerprint and Aadhaar number – are required to access a person’s Aadhaar details as per the provisions under the central government Act that regulates the use of the database.

He further said that the law prohibits police from accessing the data. “It is used only for authentication purposes and not for verification,” he added.

On February 6, police had released physical details and a picture of the unidentified woman with a Trident tattoo inked below the elbow of her right hand and announced a cash reward of Rs 50,000 for any information that can help identify the woman.

The first postmortem report received from Capital Hospital here has revealed that the woman was beheaded with a sharp weapon after being strangled to death.

The body, however, has again been sent to AIIMS-Bhubaneswar here for a second autopsy.
