Puri: The headmistress of a primary school in Odisha’s Puri district has been suspended for negligence after a Class IV student was bitten by a snake on the school premises.
Official sources said assistant teacher Jayashree Sahoo, who was in-charge headmistress of Poparanga Primary School at Pipili, has been suspended over the incident that took place on Tuesday.
The Pipili Block Education Officer (BEO) suspended Sahoo on charges of negligence in duty and deviation of government rule under the OCS (CCA) Rule.
The class teacher, identified as Gitanjali Raut, was also transferred to another school over the incident.
The teacher had allegedly punished the student for not being able to answer questions. It was claimed that the student was asked to clean the school’s store room, where he was reportedly bitten by a cobra.
The student was immediately rushed to the Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar, where he is currently undergoing treatment. His condition is stable, said sources.
After the incident came to light, the authorities took action against the school headmistress. The class teacher who had punished the student has been transferred.
