Bhubaneswar: On the eve of World Heart Day on September 29, the AMRI Hospitals, here announced launch of a ‘cardiac support group’ to provide information and create a network for those in need of cardiac treatment.

Speaking at the launching function of the group, Dr JK Padhi, Director, Cardiology, AMRI Hospitals, said contrary to common belief that heart diseases affect people above 50 years, it can strike anybody, any time, from childhood to the early twenties. It is recommended to get your cholesterol checked every five years, starting at the age of 20, he added

“Heart health has assumed even more significance during the COVID pandemic, as there is a rising trend of sudden heart attacks, and even people below the age of 40 are affected. Faulty lifestyle, unhealthy diet, heavy smoking, or a history of cardiac complaints are responsible for rising heart troubles in younger people.” said Dr Mahesh Prasad Agrawala

Renowned cardiac surgeons like Dr Jitendranath Patnaik, Dr Biswajeet Mohapatra and senior cardiologist Dr Lingaraj Nath said in the present time, the focus of cardiac treatment should be more on preventive measures, rather than curative measures.

Nilanjana Mukherjee, vice-president and unit head, AMRI Hospitals Bhubaneswar, pointed out that sedentary lifestyle even among those having high blood pressure and diabetes, lack of exercise and bad habits like consumption of tobacco and alcohol contribute to cardiac diseases.

Several patients, who had undergone treatment at the hospital, shared their experiences on how their unhealthy lifestyle led to cardiovascular diseases. Their life returned to a normal after coming in contact with cardiac experts of AMRI Hospitals, they added.
