Heatwave Alert Continues In Odisha Till June 14 Amid Slow Progress Of Monsoon

Bhubaneswar: Amid slow advancement of southwest monsoon after its onset over Odisha, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday sounded yellow warning of heatwave till June 14.

According to the weather agency, heatwave may prevail in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Balangir, Boudh, and Nuapada districts under the influence of dry north-westerly winds blowing towards the state.

Hot and humid weather conditions are also likely in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati districts during this period.

Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by  gusty surface windspeed reaching 30-40 kmph is likely at one or two places in Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Bhadrak, Sundargarh, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Malkangiri, and Koraput on June 10. Similar weather conditions may occur at at one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Balangir, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, and Deogarh districts during the subsequent 24 hours.

On June 12, thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface windspeed reaching 30-40 kmph is likely at one or two places in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Ganjam, Gajapati, Nayagarh, Puri, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Balangir, Sonepur, and Boudh.

Malkangiri, Koraput, and Rayagada districts are likely to experience similar thunderstorm activities on June 13-14.

The MeT office has also forecast a gradual rise in the day temperature by 2-3 degree Celsius at many places in the state during the next 5 days with no large change thereafter.

Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre director Manorama Mohanty told the media that conditions for advancement of monsoon are not favourable in next five days. “Southwest Monsoon has advanced into some more parts of North Arabian Sea and some more parts of Maharashtra. Conditions are favourable for further advance of Southwest Monsoon into more parts of north Arabian Sea, some parts of South Gujarat and Maharashtra during next 2 days.”

Fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rain or thundershower with possibility of heavy rainfall at one or two places is likely in Odisha during the first half of the week, starting June 14. The temperature may remain near normal to slightly above normal in interior districts of the state during the second half of this week, according to the extended range outlook.
