Heatwave Conditions In Odisha To Abate From Next Week; Mercury Crosses 40°C Again In Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday predicted an abatement in heatwave conditions in Odisha from May 6.

The extreme heat condition may begin to subside in coastal Odisha after 2 days. “The day temperature will fall by 3-4°C at many places in the state after 3 days,” according to the midday bulletin.

The weather agency had issued orange warning of heatwave for Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Angul, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Boudh, Balangir, and Deogarh districts during the day. Yellow warning of heatwave was also sounded for Nayagarh, Dhenkanal, Nuapada, Sonepur, and Kalahandi.

Amid the prevailing heat conditions, the day temperature again soared to 41.6°C in Bhubaneswar by 2.30 in the afternoon, a day after the city saw the mercury level drop below 40°C after 17 days straight. Sambalpur was the hottest at 42.5°C followed by Jharsuguda (42.1°C), Hirakud (41.8°C), Bhubaneswar (41.6°C), Rourkela (40.6°C), and Balasore (39.8°C).

The heatwave warning continues for 2 more days when some places in the state are also likely to experience thunderstorm and lightning.

On May 6, the IMD has predicted thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph at one or two places in Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Koraput, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar.

Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph may continue at one or two places in Kandhamal, Boudh, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Cuttack, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balangir, and Kalahandi during the subsequent 24 hours. Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may also occur at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda and Gajapati during this period.

The mercury is likely to hover around 36-37°C in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack on these days.

While there are no further weather warning thereafter, light to moderate rain/thundershower is likely continue in Odisha during the subsequent two days, it added.
