Bhubaneswar: The severe heatwave sweeping across Odisha is likely to continue for three more days and people may get some respite after Tuesday, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD).

There is no possibility of any major change in the day temperature (maximum temperature) till Tuesday. Subsequently, the day temperature will gradually fall by 3°C – 5°C at many places in the state, it said.

As the entire state is now under the grip of intense heatwave, Sambalpur recorded 45.4 degree Celsius by 2.30 pm, followed by 44.4 degree in Jharsuguda and 44.2 degree in Hirakud.

However, the mercury dropped considerably in the state capital of Bhubaneswar which recorded 40 degree Celsius by 2.30 pm compared to 44.3 degree on Saturday. The fall in temperature was attributed to wind flow in the city during the day.

The MeT Centre said the maximum temperature is very likely to be 4°C – 7°C above normal at a few places over the districts of Odisha during the next three days. Consequently, hot and discomfort weather is likely during next three days and people are advised to take precautionary measures to avoid heat exposure, keep cool and avoid dehydration while going outside during day time between 11 am and 3 pm.

The IMD has issued orange alert for heatwave to severe heatwave at some places over Keonjhar, Sundargarh,  Sambalpur, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Deogarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Balangir, Kandhamal, Cuttack, Khurda, and Nayagarh districts on Sunday.

A yellow warning for heatwave was issued for Mayurbhanj, Jajpur, Nuapada, and Kalahandi.

Similarly, orange warning for the heatwave to severe heatwave was issued for Monday at some places over Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Bargarh, Sonepur, Deogarh, Angul, Boudh, Balangir, and Kandhmal districts. A yellow warning for heatwave has been issued for one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Khordha, Nuapada, and Kalahandi.
