Bhubaneswar: Severe heatwave conditions may prevail in Gajapati, Ganjam, Balasore Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Jharsuguda, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar Balangir, Nuapada, and Kahahandi, the office of Special Relief Commissioner, Odisha, informed on Friday.
Heatwave condition is also likely in Sundargarh, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Nuapada, Balangir, Deogarh, Boudh, Sonepur, Malkangiri, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Khurda, and Nayagarh.
By 8:30 this morning, Bhawanipatna recorded the highest maximum temperature of 36.2°C, followed by Keonjhar (35.6°C), Talcher, Baripada and Angul at 35°C each, Bhubaneswar and Balasore at 33.6°C each, Cuttack and Sambalpur at 33.2°C each, Hirakud, Titilagarh, Boudh and Jagatsinghpur at 33°C each, Chandbali and Rourkela at 32.8°C and Jharsuguda at 32.6°C.
The state is likely to experience the longest spells of heatwave in 12-15 years with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing warnings till April 29. Red alert of severe heatwave has also been issued for several districts for two days, starting Friday.

The weather agency has also forecast a rise in mercury levels by 2-3°C in two days. “The day temperature is expected to remain 3 to 6 °C above normal in many parts of the state for the next 5 days,” it added.
In its extended weather outlook, the IMD said that dry weather with isolated severe heatwave and thunderstorm activity may occur in Odisha between April 26 and May 9.

On Thursday, 22 places recorded 42°C or more as extreme heat continued to batter Odisha for the 11th consecutive day. Jharsuguda was the hottest at 43.8°C followed by Baripada (43.6°C), Nuapada (43.5°C), Talcher (43.4°C), Boudh (43.2°C), Kendrapada, Cuttack and Balangir at 43°C each and Bhubaneswar (42.2°C).
