Heatwave May Prevail In 3 Odisha Dists Today; Temp Likely To Drop By 2-4°C After 24 Hours

Bhubaneswar: Amid forecast for further advance of southwest monsoon into more parts of Odisha in next 2-3 days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday sounded yellow warning of heatwave for Balangir, Nuapada, and Jharsuguda districts.

Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface windspeed reaching 30-40 kmph may also occur at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Balangir, Sonepur, and Sambalpur till 8.30 am on Thursday (June 20).

Similar weather condition may prevail in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts during the subsequent 24 hours.

Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface windspeed reaching 30-40 kmph is also likely in Sundargarh, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj on June 21, and Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Balasore on June 22-23.

Hot and humid weather may also prevail at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Khurda, and Gajapati till June 21.

The weather agency had predicted a gradual fall in the day temperature by 2-4 degree Celsius after 24 hours.

The SOA’s Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) had earlier predicted a fall in maximum temperature in parts of Odisha by 3 degree Celsius from Wednesday. “The Arabian branch of monsoon is likely to be strengthened from Tuesday with westerly wind flow which is expected to favour occurrence of pre-monsoon rain on June 18 and 19. The onset of South West monsoon in south Odisha districts and Bhubaneswar is expected on June 20,” it had said.

On Tuesday, the mercury soared past 40 degree Celsius at eight places in the state with Nuapada being the hottest at 43 degree Celsius. Bhubaneswar and Cuttack recorded 39.8 degree Celsius and 38.4 degree Celsius, respectively.
