Heatwave May Subside In Odisha From Tomorrow; Temp To Fall By 4-5°C After May 5

Bhubaneswar: Heatwave conditions may continue in districts of Bhadrak, Angul, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balangir, Sonpur, Nayagada, Boudh, Ganjam, Jajpur, Dhenkanal. Bargarh, Nuapada, and Kendrapada, the office of Special Relief Commissioner, Odisha, informed on Thursday.

According to the morning bulletin of India Meteorological Department (IMD), heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely in some parts of Odisha on May 2. The intensity is likely to lessen thereafter with heatwave conditions in isolated pockets over the region during the subsequent 3-4 days. “Maximum temperature in the range of 44-47°C likely to continue over North Odisha till May 3 and decrease thereafter.”

On Wednesday, thunderstorm along with rain brought some respite from scorching heat in coastal districts of Odisha, even as 15 towns in the state recorded temperature of 43°C or above. Talcher was the hottest at 45°C, followed by Boudh and Titilagarh at 44.5°C each, Nuapada (44.4°C), Angul and Jharsuguda at 44.3°C each and Balangir (44°C).

A day after recording the season’s highest temperature of 45.4°C, the mercury dipped to 41.3°C in Bhubaneswar as thunderstorm, rain, lightning and hail lashed the city in the afternoon. Similar weather conditions were seen in Cuttack, which recorded 41.5 degree Celsius.

“The temperatures may fall by 1 to 2 °C due to rainfall activities. However, severe heatwave conditions would continue in the state for the next few days,” Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre director Manorama Mohanty told the PTI.
